Be on alert for a contact tracing scam circulating in Baker County. Callers pose as local COVID-19 contact tracers and attempt to gain financial information from individuals.
In this particular scam, the caller stated that he/she was a contact tracer and was “contracting with” the Baker County Health Department to provide these services. The caller then began asking for personal information, including the person’s social security number. Alicia Hills, Baker County Health Department Nursing Supervisor, stated that “the Health Department is not “contracting” with any outside sources to conduct local contact tracing.”
Legitimate contact tracers may ask you about various health information or places you have been. They may suggest that you quarantine or monitor any symptoms you may have. But, they will NEVER ask you for:
- Payment
- Bank account or credit card numbers
- Social Security Number
Never share financial information with anyone claiming to be a contact tracer. If you suspect that the caller may not be a legitimate contact tracer, hang up the phone. Contact tracing is a crucial tool to help slow the spread of COVID-19. The Health Department urges residents to answer these calls but to remain vigilant.
